540°
Rescue Belay (SMALL or LARGE):
Separate models are available for teams using either 11.1 or
12.7 mm kernmantle rescue ropes. With both the Small and Large models,
because of its bi-directional rope loading design, either end of the rope
exiting the device can be used to attach to the load, thereby reducing
the chance of an improperly loaded device.
540° Rapide
Rescue Belay (SMALL):
If quickly taking-in
belay rope is important to your team, then consider using the 540°
Rapide Rescue Belay. It is different than the 'standard' 540° in that
it only locks on the rope on one side, and therefore has more specific
rope loading requirements. The advantage of the Rapide's uni-directional
rope loading requirement is that it allows belay
rope to be rapidly taken-in without inadvertantly locking-off the rope.
The 10.6-11.6 mm model will be available in Fall/Winter of 2001.

The 540°
Rescue Belay passes demanding Belay Competence Drop Test Criteria
of being able to catch a 1m drop of 280kg (617lbm) rescue sized load onto
3m of 12.7 mm kernmantle rescue rope, within 1m of additional travel (pre-bound),
and with less than 15kN peak force.
For example, a sample
test of 1m drop on 3m of 12.5 mm PMI EZ bend rope with a 280kg mass resulted
in a peak force of 12.9kN with only 62cm of additional travel, pre-bound,
and only 24cm of rope slippage through the 540° Rescue Belay.
