Mountain Rescue Week
An Advanced Mountain Rescue Seminar for Previous Rigging for Rescue Participants
If you are serious about mountain rescue, then give serious consideration to participating in Rigging for Rescue's Specialized Mountain Rescue Week. This high caliber seminar - offered only every other year - will be held at a basecamp in the spectacular alpine setting of Little Switzerland. Located in the Pika Glacier drainage of the central Alaska Range Mountains, Little Switzerland is a seldom-visited alpine climbing venue with beautiful granite, rugged glaciated terrain and close proximity to excellent mountain rescue challenges. Rigging for Rescue Mountain Rescue Week was previously held here in 2008

Our basecamp's proximity to the technical challenges of big walls, seracs & crevasses, rock cliffs and mixed mountain routes will allow for demanding and realistic exercises. Through the application of practical, efficient and effective principles and techniques - while maintaining high levels of safety - participants will gain appreciation and insight for rigging logistics as well as approaches specific to the Mountain Rescue medium. Exercises may include pick-offs, advanced litter handling techniques, multi-pitch lowers on mixed terrain, guiding lines, and snow, ice and crevasse rescue challenges.

Due to the seriousness of this mountain rescue terrain, this seminar is open only to previous Rigging for Rescue participants who possess solid mountaineering skills and are in good physical and mental condition. The seminar will start at 17:00 on Saturday, June 23, in Talkeetna for a 'meet & greet' and gear sort. We will plan to fly into the mountains on Sunday morning. Please inquire directly for the Specialized Mountain Rescue Week 2012 information package and application form.

Dates: Saturday, June 23 through Saturday, June 30, 2012
Fees: $1,695 US includes round-trip air transportation from Talkeetna, AK into Little Switzerland with Talkeetna Air Taxi

About the Pika Glacier, aka 'Little Switzerland'

The Pika Glacier of the central Alaska Range is located approximately 35 miles to the south of Mt. McKinley. This infrequently visited area has been aptly dubbed 'Little Switzerland' for it's spectacular alpine setting.

Our basecamp at 5,600 feet is positioned below beautiful soaring granite buttresses. The valley is home to numerous moderately-graded alpine rock climbing objectives of 500-2,500 feet, snow couloirs, seracs, crevasses and easily accessible terrain. Rigging for Rescue has conducted a mountain rescue training seminar in Little Switzerland on two previous occasions and the included photos are from a Mountain Rescue Week in July, 2008, and a contract seminar with the 212th RQS and Denali National Park in March, 2006

Access to Little Switzerland is via a glacier flight from Talkeetna. The flight is incredibly scenic and offers the passenger a real appreciation for the scope and scale of the central Alaska Range Mountains. Weather is always a major consideration when traveling in the Alaska Range; participants should include some flexibility in their Lower 48 return flight in case of unexpected weather delays at the back end of the seminar. June weather is typically quite good with moderate temperatures and around 22 hours of daylight.

Little Switzerland offers some of the highest quality, most easily accessible, glaciated mountain rescue terrain anywhere in the country. Consider joining us for an intense, high caliber week of training!
